Why Garage Door Cables Matter

Lift cables connect the bottom of your door to the spring system. As the springs unwind, the cables wrap onto drums at the top and pull the door up evenly on both sides. They're small parts, but they carry the full weight of the door.

When a cable frays, slips off its drum or snaps, one side of the door loses support. The door can go crooked, jam in the tracks, or drop hard. Like springs, cables are under tension and should be replaced by someone with the right tools.

Why Garage Door Cables Matter

Even lifting

Two cables lift both sides at the same rate so the door rises straight.

Carry the weight

Cables transfer the spring force to the door. A snapped cable means an unsupported side.

Protect the tracks

A crooked door from a bad cable can bend tracks and pop rollers out.

Under tension

Cables are connected to loaded springs. Replacing them safely takes the right tools.

Signs of a Bad Cable, and Why We Replace Both

A damaged cable isn't something to patch. It's replaced. Here's what to look for, and why we always do both sides together.

Signs a cable is failing

  • Frayed, rusty or kinked strands you can see on the cable
  • A cable hanging loose or unwound from the drum
  • Door opens or closes crooked, with one side higher
  • Door jerks, shudders or slams at the bottom
  • Door stuck partway open or jammed in the tracks

Why we replace cables in pairs

  • Both cables have carried the same loads for the same years
  • A new cable next to a worn one lifts unevenly
  • Matched cables keep the door balanced and square
  • We also check drums, pulleys and springs while we're there
  • One visit instead of a second failure on the other side

If a cable is broken or off its drum, don't use the door or the opener until it's fixed. The door is only supported on one side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive the cable back on myself?

We don't recommend it — cables are under spring tension and this is a common cause of injury. Call for a same-day repair instead.
