Broken Spring Repair
A broken spring is the most common — and most dangerous — garage door failure. We replace torsion and extension springs with correctly rated hardware and rebalance the door.
Why Your Garage Door Springs Matter
Springs do the heavy lifting on a garage door. A typical door weighs 150 to 350 pounds, and the springs are wound or stretched to balance almost all of that weight, so the opener (or your hands) only has to guide it. When a spring breaks, the door suddenly becomes dead weight.
Springs are rated for a limited number of open-and-close cycles, and they wear out with normal use. A broken spring is one of the most common garage door failures, and because springs hold so much tension, it's also one of the most dangerous to handle without the right tools and training.

They lift the weight
Springs balance the door so it feels light. Without them the door is too heavy to lift safely.
They protect the opener
An opener isn't built to lift a door on its own. A broken spring can burn it out.
Serious tension
Springs store a lot of energy. Winding or releasing them without proper tools causes injuries.
They wear out
Every open and close uses up part of a spring's life, even when nothing looks wrong.
Signs of a Broken Spring, and Why We Replace in Pairs
Springs can't be repaired. A broken or worn spring is always replaced. The question is whether it's broken yet, and whether the other spring is close behind.
Signs a spring is broken or failing
- A loud bang from the garage, like a firecracker
- A visible gap in the torsion spring above the door
- Door feels extremely heavy or won't lift by hand
- Opener runs but the door only rises a few inches, or not at all
- Door slams down fast or closes crooked
- Cables hanging loose off the drums
Why we replace both springs
- Springs installed together have used the same number of cycles
- When one breaks, the other is usually close to the end of its life
- Matched springs keep the door balanced and lifting evenly
- One visit instead of a second call in a few weeks or months
- Correctly rated springs are sized to your door's actual weight
If you think a spring is broken, don't use the opener and don't try to lift the door. Leave it closed and call us. Forcing it can damage the opener, cables or door.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my spring break?
Springs have a rated life cycle (typically 7-10 years of normal use) and wear out from repeated tension, not from a single event.
Should I replace one spring or both?
If your door has two springs, we generally recommend replacing both together since the second is usually close behind on wear.
